USAID’s Repositioning Family Planning for Sustainable Development in Africa Initiative leads strategic partnerships to increase political and financial support for family planning in sub-Saharan African countries. Key approaches include the following:
  • Mobilizing financial and technical assets
    • Include family planning into financing mechanisms
    • Leverage resources in other sectors
    • Ensure resources that have been committed are being used to advance country programs
  • Elevate family planning/reproductive health issues as key to countries’ economic and social development
    • Use advocacy tools to demonstrate the importance of family planning to social and economic development
    • Support resiliency efforts in Niger, Mali, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, and Senegal
    • Continue to focus on the Demographic Dividend, an important argument for country ministers
  • Strengthen leadership in both the public and private sector
    • Strengthen civil society’s ability to advocate for FP/RH issues
    • Support capacity building efforts to develop southern institutions
    • Connect country teams to facilitate knowledge exchange
